What is sugarcane?
Sugarcane refers to several species of tall perennial true grasses of the genus Saccharum used for sugar production, which grow in tropical regions of South Asia and Melanesia. Their thick, fibrous stalks, between 2 and 6 metres tall, are rich in sucrose, from which sugar is obtained.
Sugarcane grows mainly in tropical and subtropical regions (sugar beet grows in cooler temperate regions). As well as sugar, sugarcane products include falernum, molasses, rum, cachaça, bagasse and ethanol.
In some regions, people use cane stalks to make pens, mats, screens and thatch. The young, unexpanded inflorescence of tebu telor is eaten raw, steamed or toasted, and prepared in various ways in certain communities on the Indonesian islands.
Bagasse, an essential material for eco-friendly tableware
The biomass left over after extracting sugar from sugarcane is a material that can be used to produce eco-friendly and sustainable tableware.
On the Todo Para Tu Hotel website you'll find a wide range of sugarcane pulp products.
How sugarcane tableware is made
One way to make use of the residues generated when extracting sugar is to produce tableware from them.
Only the inside of the cane is used to extract the sugar juice, leaving the outer part unused. This part is known as bagasse, fibre or bark, and it's what is used to make sugarcane plates.
Bagasse is the material used to make eco-friendly cane tableware
Once extracted, the bagasse is processed as follows:
- It is washed and rinsed
- It is mixed with a natural binder
- It is pressed into the desired shape
This technique makes it possible to use parts of the cane that were completely useless a few years ago to create a large number of containers.
This is possible because sugarcane grows very fast, and each cane can produce more than 50 plates.
Products that can be made from sugarcane
This tableware is an excellent alternative to plastic plates, with similar properties but far more environmentally friendly.

Benefits of palm leaf
One of the biggest problems we face today is the mass consumption of plastics and their slow, polluting decomposition. Plastics take decades to degrade, whereas other materials such as sugarcane break down in just 180 days.
Producing disposable sugarcane tableware allows us to eliminate the ecological footprint these residues leave. This material is as versatile and sturdy as plastic, as well as completely natural and biodegradable.
